Dr. Paris Lambdin, Professor

Research

My research involves studies in the biosystematics, biology, and phylogenetics of the scale insects (Hemiptera: Coccoidea), insect biodiversity on economically and environmentally important forest trees, and biological control of scale insects and adelgids.

Research projects currently in progress in my lab include:

(1) Biodiversity, demographics, and phylogeographic analyses of insect species associated with eastern hemlock in new and old growth forests (with Jerome Grant, University of Tennessee; Kris Johnson, Great Smoky Mountains National Park).

(2) Analysis of the establishment of the coccinellid Pseudoscymnus tsugae as a biological control agent against the exotic hemlock woolly adelgid with Jerome Grant, University of Tennessee; Kris Johnson, Great Smoky Mountains National Park).

(3) Morphology and biosystematics of immature pit scales (with Elzibeta Podsiadlo, National Institute of Entomology, Warsaw, Poland).

(4) Systematics of the Pit scales of North and South America (with Christof Stumpf, NC State University).

(5) Analysis of the cellular tissue involved in production of carminic acid in the cochineal scale.
