Dr. Jerome Grant, Professor

Research

Pest management and applied ecology of insects; biocontrol.

Title: Classical Biological Control of Selected Arthropod Pests and Weed Through Introduction of Natural Enemies (with Dr. Lambdin).
Objectives: To release, establish, and evaluate selected introduced natural enemies of arthropod pests and weeds. Current projects are directed at alfalfa, small grains, and musk thistle.

Title: Bionomics and Management of Insect Pests of Wheat.
Objectives: 1) To investigate the bionomics and behavior of insect pests of wheat and assess the status of Hessian fly and cereal leaf beetle in Tennessee. 2) To evaluate management strategies for controlling Hessian fly and cereal leaf beetle populations on wheat (including cultural control and host plant resistance). 3) To identify and assess the impact of natural enemies (predators, parasitoids and pathogens) of Hessian fly and cereal leaf beetle.

Title: Development of Sustainable Area-wide Weed Management Practices for Improved Land Utilization (with Dr. Lambdin).
Objectives: 1) Establish and maintain field insectaries in GA, NC, TN, and VA for propagation of biological control agents of musk thistle. 2) Develop a distribution plan to provide biological control agents to landowners and agencies for release in thistle-infested areas. 3) Develop and implement a regional educational program to improve public awareness of this type of system. 4) Assess the economic and environmental benefits of this type of sustainable weed management program.
