Dogwoods are in the genus Cornus, in the family Cornaceae. The family Cornaceae has three genera: Cornus, Aucuba, Helwingia. Cornus: deciduous shrubs, occasionally also trees; leaves opposite, (except on C. alternifolia and C. controversa), entire, usually pubescent; flowers small, 4 parted, in terminal cymes without bracts or in capitate umbels with 4 or 6 bracts; fruit a berry-like, white, blue, red or black drupe. – About 40 species in the northern temperate zone. |
