The S-282 meeting for 1999 was held in Springdale, Arkansas on 19-22 October. The meeting was held jointly with NC-215 and W-186. The meeting was opened with welcoming remarks from Dr. Randy Luttrell, Assoc. Dean, Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food, and Life Sciences, University of Arkansas; and from Dr. Sung Lim, Head, Dept. Plant Pathology, University of Arkansas. The general sessions consisted of project summaries by representatives of each regional research project. The overall objectives of each regional project were outlined so that all participants understood how each individual project contributed to the separate objectives of the different projects. The need to clearly and specifically communicate the impact of the results of the regional research projects was discussed by Dr. Knapp. Impact statements, will include economic, social, and enviroonmental considerations, should become a part of the annual reports.

The S-282 participants discussed the need to begin planning for project renewal in 2000, with a review of achievements to be conducted in 2001. Dr. Knapp reported that the process for review and approval of regional research proposals should be more stream lined in the future. The project is being strongly encouraged to develop a webb site to facilitate communication among members and with others interested in the results of the project. P. Timper agreed to work with E. Bernard who has developed the web site. Copies of guidelines, which were developed by the southern Experiment Station directors, for web sites will be provided by F. Knapp. The committee agreed to contact Roberto Vargas at the University of Puerto Rico-Mayaguez and Nathan Walker at Oklahoma State University to determine their interest in participating in the project. R. Riggs agreed to undertake this initiative.

Dr. Edward McGawley was elected Chair of the committee for 2000 and has agreed to host the next meeting, to be held at Louisiana State University in the fall of 2000. McGawley is to coordinate the timing of the meeting with the annual meetings of NC-215 and W-186 so as to avoid as many scheduling conflicts as possible.
